About CBVA

CBVA, Inc. is an amateur athletic organization founded in 1984 that provides a safe space for recreational and competitive volleyball within metropolitan Boston. The league welcomes all volleyball enthusiasts regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender, creed, religion, or national origin. The league focuses on providing members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) community and the LGBTQ-friendly community a venue to engage in the sport of volleyball. The purpose of CBVA is to promote and develop the sport of volleyball among the LGBTQ and LGBTQ-friendly community in and around metropolitan Boston. The league encourages players of different skill levels to enjoy the game of volleyball. CBVA organizes weekly play while observing USA Volleyball rules.

About the Board

Executive Board

Commissioner

  • Leads the Board, works with the rest of the Board to set and pursue goals
  • Serves as CBVA’s primary representative to members, partners, and the community
  • Holds signatory authority and accountability for legal and tax compliance
  • Makes sure committees and volunteers have what they need to succeed
  • Coordinates board transitions, elections, and appointments*
  • Works closely with the Vice-Commissioner to split focus areas and ensure good Executive Board representation in each committee

Vice-Commissioner

  • Directly supports and steps in for Commissioner as needed
  • Helps coordinate across committees
  • Supports special projects and cross-cutting work
  • Works closely with the Commissioner to split focus areas and ensure good Executive Board representation in each committee

Treasurer

  • Owns the budget, financial reporting, and monthly account reconciliation
  • Manages deposits, reimbursements, and spending controls
  • Coordinates tax filings and the relationship with our accountant
  • Manages reserves and designated funds for large expenses (e.g. Boston Beantown Classic, Race for the Tiara)

Secretary

(Historically, this is an under-utilized role that we’re interested in more fully developing and relying upon)

  • Keeps minutes of Board and membership meetings
  • Sends required notices (meetings, elections) to members and Board
  • Maintains official records, the member list, and internal documents and artifacts
  • Administers elections and nominations logistics

Committee Chairs

Finance Chair

  • Supports the Treasurer on budgeting, controls, and financial oversight
  • Helps develop reserve, investment, and spending policies
  • Reviews large or unusual expenditures
  • Supports audits and reviews related to 501(c)(7)/(3) status

Ratings Chair

  • Coordinates volunteer raters and runs ratings sessions
  • Maintains clear, fair, and consistent ratings and ratings procedures
  • Manages re-rate requests and supports the appeals process
  • Keeps session levels across the league balanced and competitive

Social Chair

  • Plans and runs CBVA’s formal (e.g. Welcome Bag, Holigay) and facilitates informal (e.g. post-Friday night league dinner/drinks) social events
  • Leads Race for the Tiara coordination and community fundraising
  • Builds community connections and partnerships
  • Manages event budgets and cash handling with the Treasurer

Indoor Chair

  • Configures regular sessions and session templates on TeamArrange
  • Makes weekly calls on sessions based on signups and coordinates with Court Managers
  • Organizes league nights (currently only Friday nights), with delegation
  • Maintains indoor play inventory (balls, medical supplies, net system equipment, etc.)
  • Files and manages indoor permits with Cambridge Public Schools

Tournament Chair

  • Plans and runs CBVA’s indoor league tournaments (BBC excluded)
  • Coordinates NAGVA/BBC events as needed
  • Manages tournament budgets, registration, and formats

Player Development Chair

  • Schedules and runs clinics and other skills-development programming across skill levels
  • Secures and coordinates coaches (paid and volunteer)

Outdoor Chair

  • Secures outdoor permits and runs regular summer outdoor play
  • Maintains outdoor equipment and setup
  • Coordinates a court-managing approach for busy sessions
  • Manages summer membership
  • Communicates weather cancellation calls

Webmaster

  • Works across the Board to keep website content useful and up to date
  • Supports TeamArrange and member-facing digital communications

Board Members At-Large

  • Help to ensure Board coverage and representation with all ratings/divisions
  • Generally contributes broadly to league-wide initiatives or to help in specific circumstances as needed
